Cabinets fail at the fastener, so start at the core

Every hinge, drawer slide, and shelf pin in a cabinet is a fastener in a panel, cycled thousands of times over its life. Vaultwood Core™, the specified premium MDF core, is chosen for that duty.

Face screw-holding of 275 to 350 lbf[4] keeps cup hinges and slide brackets tight through repeated open-and-close, and a consistent 45 to 49 pcf density[2] means the same result on the first cabinet and the fiftieth. Modulus of rupture over 4,500 psi[4] keeps long runs and tall pantry sides from bowing between fasteners.

Spec guidance: use Vaultwood Core in premium MDF, not HDF, for cabinet boxes, applied faces, and paint-grade doors where a stable, machinable substrate matters more than raw hardness. Place hardware so screws engage the full core thickness, and pilot for slides in tall cabinets[5]. Where cabinets meet damp rooms like baths and laundries, a dense, uniform core also gives you a more moisture-stable substrate than a low-density panel, though no MDF is waterproof, so detail edges and finishes accordingly[5]. For kitchens and closets inside occupied homes, call out the NAF option with TSCA Title VI[7] and CARB Phase 2[8] documentation.

The failure to avoid: a hinge that strips or a slide that sags because the substrate could not hold the screw, or a face that reads wavy under paint because the core moved. Both start with an underspecified core.

Where casework becomes a moving assembly, for example a cabinet run concealing a hidden door, manufacturers build the full system on this core, specifying hardware to suit the finished assembly and its load.
