Substrate Requirements for Hardware Load Ratings

Any hardware load rating is a claim about two things: the hardware, and the panel it is screwed into. This page covers the second one. It sets out the panel property values Vaultwood Core™ specifies, the test methods that make them checkable, and why a rating means nothing if the substrate underneath it is not repeatable.

What this standard covers, and what it does not

The panel, not the hardware

Vaultwood Core specifies the material only. It does not cover hinges, pivots, slides, or any door hardware, and it does not issue load ratings for finished products. Those belong to whoever builds and tests the finished assembly. What the standard governs is the panel that the hardware is fastened into, which is the part most load claims quietly depend on and rarely state.

This distinction matters because a fastener does not pull out of a hinge. It pulls out of the board. A hinge rated for a heavy panel will still fail if the material under the screw is soft, inconsistent, or voided, and no rating on the hardware can compensate for that. So the useful question for a specifier is not only what the hardware was rated to, but what it was rated into.

Hardware is only as strong as what it is screwed into

That is where the Vaultwood Core standard does its job. Density: Vaultwood Core is premium MDF at 45 to 49 pcf with modulus of rupture over 4,500 psi[11], so fasteners bite into consistent material with no soft core to strip out. Face screw withdrawal is specified at 275 to 350 lbf[11], measured rather than asserted. Consistency: because panels are produced to the property requirements of ANSI A208.2[2] and evaluated using ASTM D1037[4], the substrate under the hardware performs the same panel to panel. A load rating is only meaningful if the material beneath it is repeatable.
