Millwork is judged up close, so the core has to finish clean

Architectural millwork is inspected at arm's length, in raking light, by people who notice a wavy profile or a soft edge. The core behind the paint decides that verdict. Vaultwood Core™, the specified premium MDF core, is built to finish clean.

A uniform 45 to 49 pcf density[2] machines to crisp profiles and sharp edges, modulus of rupture over 4,500 psi[4] keeps paneling and long trim flat across a wall, and a dense, homogeneous body takes primer and paint without grain telegraphing.

Spec guidance: for wall paneling, wainscot, jamb extensions, and profiled trim, specify Vaultwood Core in premium MDF, not HDF, when a paint-grade surface and clean machining lead the priorities. Seal cut edges before finishing and acclimate stock to the interior before install[5]. For occupied and public interiors, and to satisfy project environmental specs, call out the NAF option with TSCA Title VI[7] and CARB Phase 2[8] documentation, and hold 275 to 350 lbf screw-holding[4] where trim carries applied hardware.

The failure to avoid: paneling that reads wavy under a gloss paint because the core moved, or a routed profile that fuzzes and chips because the substrate was inconsistent. On millwork, the core is visible through the finish whether you planned for it or not.

When millwork becomes a moving element, such as a paneled wall that conceals a door, manufacturers engineer that assembly on this core, specifying hardware to suit the finished assembly and its load.
